Summer is officially here!
We’ve come within half a degree of triple digits in the Sierra Foothills already, so as far as I’m concerned, the season was already well underway.
I don’t know about you, but when it’s hot out, the last thing I want to do is turn on the stove. For that reason, Gwynly and I eat a lot of salads during the summer.
While we enjoy our robust salads chock-full of goodies, I do tire of them on occasion. Sandwiches are an easy non-cooking alternative, but I don’t enjoy them as much as Gwynly does.
One day recently, I mentioned to him that I wasn’t looking forward to having yet another salad. He took pity on me and told me he’d get dinner. Since I enjoy cooking about as much as being stung by a wasp, I gladly took him up on his offer. Salad became a much more appealing option when I didn’t have to fix it.
When Gwynly called me to dinner that night, I was in for a surprise. Instead of a big salad, I found a plate of appetizers prepared just for me.
Being a scientist, Gwynly likes to experiment. He’s actually a much better cook than I am, a fact I learned to accept and appreciate years ago.
That night, he used items we had on hand to create this tasty treat: Milton’s Everything crackers, tomato slices, feta cheese, basil, and pepperoncini slices.
My guy knows what I like, and appetizers is high on the list. When we go to parties, I hang out at the hors d’oeuvres table and graze.
I know the saying says the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, but Gwynly turned the cliché on its head that night. His thoughtfulness mushed me out big time, proving that romance can be appetizing.

Keli, I love your new website! Purple is one of my favorite colors! Yes, my hubby is a better cook than I am and I do love it when he takes over the kitchen, even if he does tend to use every pot and utensil in the house! There is something special about a guy making a meal for his girl.
Keli, you have such a sweet guy. And I hear you about the cooking thing. My hubby is a fantastic cook. In the summertime, we do a lot of grilling. Food always tastes better when someone else prepares it. My son is majoring in culinary arts, so he always has a tasty dish to try when he’s home.
My hubby is a good cook, too… he makes lunch or dinner (or sometimes both) for us every day. I think it started when I was working and on a deadline. I would be closed into my office and oblivious to mealtimes, so it was create something for himself or go hungry. LOL. He discovered he enjoyed being in the kitchen, and now he even bakes for us. I love it!
Keli, dare I swoon?! How romantic, thoughtful, and super impressive! My darling is a great help around the home and in many other areas, but cooking isn’t quite his forte. I do love to prepare special treats and meals that will melt his heart though.
Oh, a word about sandwiches. I don’t care for them much either, but I do find the flavored flatbreads a nice alternative to the regular sandwich-style bread. And then there are the pita pockets–great for holding deelish things like chicken salad. See. Now you did it. Now, I’m hungry! lol!
Hehe, my hope is that when I have a special someone he either a) loves to cook or b) has enough money to hire us a cook. hehehe…
No but seriously, I do really enjoy cooking and baking…when I have time. And time is an awesome way to show love. So someday when I’m married, I do want to take the time to make my man happy by making his tummy happy.
Gwynly is such a keeper! I must agree, I love preparing special meals for loved ones. Whether a family member, friend, or special occasion celebration, I delight in pulling out the stops to make them feel special. Good stuff!
Super impressive! My husband is NOT a cook. He CAN cook…just doesn’t really think he can unless given specific instructions. However, we recently got a grill and I’ve been very impressed with the meals he’s made. He takes pride in it, and that’s really cool to see.
And yes, I love cooking because I have an appreciative husband. He likes most anything I make. That encourages ME to try new things and gives me a fun way to serve him.
My husband is amazing with the grill. My favorite thing he makes are cream cheese stuffed jalapenos. He’s always adding something delicious to them like bacon or chives. Yum!
My husband is an awesome cook. He especially enjoys cooking breakfast, and boy, does he make some awesome gravy! Sometimes he will make omelets with my lowfat cheese and turkey bacon just because he loves me.
You’ve got quite the husband there, Keli. But I know you know that.
On our first date, my husband suggested we browse a kitchen store.
Wow. I was impressed.
And he still loves to cook — actually, our entire family loves to cook. Me — not so much anymore, but I don’t need to. There is always a crowd in the kitchen willing to cook something up. And grilling is always a favorite option too, which is why my husband got a new grill for Father’s Day.
I gotta say, Eric doesn’t cook much but he makes the best French toast ever. He’s uses an old family recipe. The kids demand it when they come home.
Oooh, I just love feta cheese!
That is very romantic! My husband doesn’t cook. He did stop on the way home from work yesterday and bring home sub sandwiches so I didn’t have to cook in this heat
Now I know how you stay so slim!
Those look delicious!
I could eat appetizers all summer long! I don’t like heavy meals when it’s hot out. Gwynly set you up right!
