A Baby for Christmas

The only Christmas gift Oscar Rabb’s four-year-old daughter prays for is one the widower can’t provide: a baby sibling. And when his neighbor’s house burns down, he’s willing to open his home to pregnant and widowed Kate Amaker and her in-laws—but not his heart. Even if his little girl’s convinced Kate’s unborn child is the answer to her wish.

Kate quickly sees the generous but aloof Oscar has little interest in growing closer to his houseguests. Still, she intends to make the coming Christmas a season to remember for his daughter. And as Oscar starts to open up to her, Kate can’t help picturing just how wonderful the holidays—and a future together—might be.

Treasured Memories

Our daughter, Adriana, will be twenty-seven on New Year’s Day. I can’t believe how quickly the years have gone by. I can recall her childhood vividly, and it doesn’t seem that long ago

This past weekend, Carl and I took a walk through our neighborhood, one we used to take with Adri when she was little. As we passed beneath a certain row of trees, I was swept back in time.

When Adri was around five, the three of us walked beneath these same trees one day. The branches hung low and created a secluded shady spot underneath that reminded Carl of the jungle. He launched into a fun version of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.”

Each time I pass under those low-hanging branches, I’m reminded of our daughter and the many times we sang that song together while walking through our imaginary jungle. What a special memory that is, one of many.

A Christmas Match

The best Christmas possible—that’s what Lavinia Crowne intends to provide before taking her orphaned nieces and nephew home to Philadelphia. But carrying out her plan may be harder than she expects, with their handsome, stubborn uncle, Henry Hawthorn, insisting on raising the children in rough-and-tumble Sutter Creek, California. Lavinia can’t bear to lose her late sister’s children, though, or go against her father’s demand to bring them home.

Henry believes his nieces and nephew need affection and security more than a lavish lifestyle. But as the children conspire to bring their aunt and uncle together, a new vision fills his head—of future Christmases spent with sweet, determined Lavinia and their growing family. Can three little matchmakers, and the spirit of the season, bring the gift of a very happy beginning?

 New Beginnings

The release of Their Mistletoe Matchmakers, my final book, marks the end of my writing career. While that’s sad in some ways, this ending has enabled me to embrace a new beginning. I’ve been transitioning to life after writing, and I can tell you, without hesitation, that retirement agrees with me.

Lavinia Crowne, the heroine of Their Mistletoe Matchmakers, is embarking on a new beginning of her own. She’s left the comfort of her luxurious lifestyle in Philadelphia and has traveled west to Sutter Creek, California in order to collect her late sister and brother-in-law’s three orphaned children.

Believing that the rough and rugged mining town is no place to raise children, Lavinia plans to take her nephew and nieces back to Pennsylvania with her. There’s just one problem. The children’s paternal uncle, Henry Hawthorn, the youngsters’ legal guardian, insists they remain in Sutter Creek with him.

Like many Gold Rush towns, Sutter Creek boasted a wide main street. Many of the buildings standing today date back to the town’s early days. The pictures below give you an idea of the historic flavor.

Henry’s late brother, Jack, built a beautiful house. I chose to use a real home in Sutter Creek as the model for the one in the story. Since the Hawthorn brothers began their careers as blacksmiths, I added wrought iron railings on the porches. Other than that—and the removal of the lawn that wouldn’t have been there in 1860—the house is just as I described it in the story, complete with a mistletoe-laden oak tree in the backyard.

This stately home might strike you as appealing, but Lavinia, the daughter of a wealthy hotel magnate, was used to life in her father’s lavish mansion. She was also used to grand Christmas celebrations. The simple one Henry has planned for the children pales by comparison, but Lavinia is prepared to remedy that.

As you might expect, Lavinia’s dogged determination to provide the children with a Christmas unlike anything they’ve ever experience causes her to clash with Henry. She’s so set on her goal that she’s already had readers flipping pages to find out if she comes to her senses. I won’t tell you how—or where—the story ends, but I will tell you that Henry, Lavinia and the children enjoy a happy ever after and a new beginning.

The Rancher’s Special Delivery

The “package” is addressed to him, but rancher Sterling Blackwell certainly didn’t order a baby! More scandalous still, he and the town’s pretty teacher are named as parents. With gossip running wild, only a marriage of convenience can protect little Gracie and their reputations until her real family is found.

Heather O’Connor is content to be the spinster schoolmarm of Valentine, Montana…until Gracie’s arrival stirs her heart. She can’t keep the adorable child without Sterling’s help, though she promises not to interfere with his life. But staying aloof from her handsome husband isn’t easy with a tiny matchmaker in tow. A mistake brought them together, but love might just make them a family by Christmas…

 Heartbreak, Healing and Hope

The past few weeks have brought one heartbreaking situation after another: devastating hurricanes, a massive earthquake in Mexico and the tragic shooting in Las Vegas. After my devotions this morning, I popped on Facebook and read about the fires raging in Santa Rosa, California that have forced three of my literary agency’s staff members to evacuate.

Heartbreaking news such as this is hard to hear. I’ve prayed about the situations repeatedly, many times through a sheen of tears. But I’m not without hope. We who have accepted the Lord as our Savior have the assurance that He’s there with and for us in good times and bad.

I shared a prayer request with a dear friend of mine this past week. She referred me to a Bible verse she finds helpful in uncertain times. I was comforted not only by the Scripture passage, but also by my friend’s kindness in directing me to the uplifting words.

Question for You

What inspirational saying or Bible verse would
you offer someone whose heart is heavy?
